Hornell High School is proudly celebrating four of our students, Lillian Hoyt, Lucy Logan, Calem Striker, and Chelsea Sylvester, who were honored as recipients at the recent “Everyday Heroes” event held at the Corning Museum of Glass. These exceptional students were among 75 students selected from 19 schools across the region for their outstanding displays of kindness, empathy, service to their school or community, and overall good character.
The “Everyday Heroes” event recognized students who consistently make a positive impact through their actions and demeanor. Lillian, Lucy, Calem, and Chelsea embody these qualities, making them deserving recipients of this recognition.
Calem Striker shared his simple yet powerful philosophy on making a difference: “There are many things that I could say to other students who want to make a difference. One thing that I believe is most important is to just be kind. Being kind every day could make a difference in someone’s life without you even realizing it.”
When asked about her aspirations to continue being an “Everyday Hero,” Lillian said, “I hope that every chance I get, I can help the community and continue to support and help people in need. In college I hope I can be the person that people want to go to for help. I hope I can make a positive impact and make connections with everyone around me.”
Her advice to other students wanting to make a positive difference is both practical and inspiring: “You don’t need a huge platform or a big moment to make an impact. Helping a classmate, listening to a friend, or volunteering locally are all meaningful ways to contribute. Understanding what others truly need often starts with listening. Stay open to different perspectives, and be willing to grow as you go. Lastly, Change doesn’t happen overnight, but small, steady efforts can lead to big results. Keep showing up, even when it’s hard or goes unnoticed.”
The recognition of Lillian, Lucy, Calem, and Chelsea underscores the values of compassion and service that Hornell High School strives to instill in its students. Their achievements serve as a powerful reminder that even everyday actions can make a significant positive impact.
Congratulations to Lillian, Lucy, Calem, and Chelsea on this well-deserved honor!
