Sankofa Brings West African Tradition to Hornell High School

Hornell High School had the opportunity to collaborate with Alfred University’s Performing Arts Division to host SUNY Brockport’s elite Sankofa African Dance & Drum Ensemble, an event that left students and staff energized, inspired, and connected.

The initiative was made possible thanks to Chase Angier, Professor of Dance at Alfred University’s School of Art & Design-Performing Arts Division, who had organized a campus performance and reached out to local schools to share the experience more broadly.

The performance brought the rich traditions of West African music and movement to life in a way that was both engaging and educational. Each piece was introduced with a brief explanation of its cultural origin and story, helping students appreciate the deep history behind the rhythms and choreography.

From the first beat of the drum, Sankofa delivered a dynamic, high-energy experience filled with color, sound, and spirit. The ensemble’s talented performers blended traditional African dance with live percussion, captivating the audience with their artistry and storytelling.

One highlight of the day included a segment of full audience participation. Students were invited into the aisles to learn the dance movements, and the performance ended with teachers joining on stage to show off their moves. “It was really exciting, and the kids talked all day about how much they liked it!” said Principal Morgan Allison.

Hornell High School is grateful to Alfred University’s Performing Arts Division for their support and partnership in making this experience possible. The school looks forward to more enriching opportunities that inspire, educate, and connect through culture and the performing arts.
