Local Artist Partners with HHS Students on Public Art Project

A unique collaboration between local artist Sam Castner and Hornell High School art students is set to bring a new public art piece to the city of Hornell.

Castner, a renowned metal sculptor, has been commissioned to create a sculpture as part of the city’s revitalization project. Recognizing the potential for educational and artistic growth, Castner has invited Hornell High School art students to participate in the design and creation process.

“I’m excited to work with these talented young artists,” said Castner. “This project will provide them with hands-on experience, inspire creativity, and help them develop valuable skills.”

HHS art teacher, Jamie Kull, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with a professional artist and contribute to a significant public art project. It’s a chance for them to learn about the design process, metalworking techniques, and the impact of art on a community.”

The students have been tasked with researching the history of Hornell and brainstorming design ideas. They will then create models of their concepts and present them to the city’s art committee. Once a design is selected, students will have the opportunity to assist with the metal fabrication process.

This partnership between Castner and Hornell High School is a testament to the power of art to inspire and transform communities. By involving students in the creation of public art, the project aims to instill a sense of pride and ownership in the community.
