Career Exploration Day a “Paw-sitive” Success for 6th Graders

Sixth-grade students at Hornell City School District experienced an exciting journey of discovery during a dynamic career exploration day. Organized by Career Development Council representative Collette Cornish, the event featured five engaging 25-minute sessions with a variety of presenters, each offering insights into different jobs, careers, and the pathways to achieve them.

Students had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the education and skills necessary for a wide array of professions. The day was structured to provide a broad overview, sparking curiosity and planting seeds for future aspirations.

Adding an extra dose of joy to the day, the local Humane Society brought along some adorable puppies! This unexpected and delightful addition undoubtedly created smiles and a unique element to the career-focused event, perhaps even inspiring future careers in animal care.

“I just wanted to thank you, all of you teachers, for allowing me to have a great time with your 6th graders,” said Cornish. “Every presenter did a phenomenal job. You all should pat yourselves on the back for your students were respectful and insightful, and with fantastic and adorable questions and answers.”

The positive impact of the event resonated with the presenters as well. Jessica Hutchison and Patricia Eshelman from Alfred State College, who presented together, shared their enthusiasm.

“We had a blast!! Thanks so much for including us,” said Hutchison. “Your students had awesome enthusiasm, were respectful, and really showcased all the great things your teachers have been teaching them. We were impressed!”

The success of the 6th grade career exploration day, complete with presentations and even some furry friends, highlights the school’s commitment to exposing students to future possibilities and fostering their natural curiosity.
