Hornell Junior High Students Empowered at “Life, Powered by You” Leadership Event

Six eighth grade students from Hornell Junior High School had the opportunity to participate in Life, Powered by You, an empowering event designed specifically for young women in eighth grade. Accompanied by 7–12 School Counselor Stephanie Hurley, the students joined other students from across the region for a day focused on leadership development, career exploration, and personal growth.

The event provided hands-on learning experiences that encouraged students to build confidence and begin thinking about their future pathways. Throughout the day, participants heard from women serving in a variety of leadership roles, including lawyers, college professors, and business professionals. These guest speakers shared their personal journeys, offered practical advice, and emphasized the importance of perseverance and education.

Students also took part in breakout sessions tailored to real-world skills. One session focused on financial management, helping participants understand the basics of budgeting, saving, and making informed money decisions. Other sessions centered on developing leadership skills, effective communication, and recognizing personal strengths. The interactive format allowed students to ask questions, share ideas, and connect directly with professional mentors.

“Life, Powered by You gave our students the opportunity to see themselves as future leaders,” said Stephanie Hurley, 7–12 School Counselor. “By connecting with women who have built successful careers in law, education, and business, our students were able to envision new possibilities for their own futures. Experiences like this help build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and remind our young women that their goals are achievable.”

The event proved to be both inspiring and impactful. Students returned to Hornell Junior High School with new insights, greater self-confidence, and a stronger sense of possibility about their futures. Opportunities like Life, Powered by You reinforce the district’s commitment to supporting students’ personal and academic growth while encouraging them to become strong, capable leaders in their communities.
