The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County’s Agriculture in the Classroom program is continuing its partnership with the Hornell City School District for a second year, bringing engaging and informative agriculture lessons to students.
The program, which serves nine participating Steuben County school districts in grades Pre-K through 7th, aims to increase students’ awareness, understanding, and appreciation of agriculture’s impact on their daily lives. This year, the program expects to reach approximately 3000 students through a variety of curriculum lessons and activities.
Each lesson includes a captivating story or mini presentation tailored to the age group, followed by a hands-on activity that reinforces the learning. The Ag in the Classroom curriculum covers a wide range of agricultural topics, including dairy, farming, consumer choices, conservation, natural resources, and food and nutrition.
“The elementary classes, in particular, seem very excited about the program,” said Kristin Brandt, the Ag in the Classroom Educator. “The students actively participate in the lessons with questions, comments, and stories, demonstrating a genuine interest in the topic. It’s truly rewarding to see the connections they make to their own lives.”
The partnership between Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Hornell City School District is providing students with a unique opportunity to learn about agriculture and its importance in our community. By engaging students in hands-on activities and real-world examples, the program is helping to create a new generation of informed and appreciative community members.
