The Hornell City School District consists of approximately 2,000 students housed in the following buildings: the North Hornell school serves grades PK-1, the Intermediate School serves grades 2-6, the high school serves grades 7-8 junior high and grades 9-12 senior high, which are housed in the same complex.

The district provides outstanding facilities for all its students and maintains a strong commitment to technology for instructional and administrative excellence. The district features a state of the art athletic complex which includes a lighted synthetic turf field, all-weather track, lighted baseball and softball stadiums and tennis courts. The district’s swimming facilities are housed at the Intermediate School.

All the district facilities are in excellent condition and an ongoing capital project continues to enhance the learning environment with advanced technology and 21st century learning strategies.

Grading Policy and Curriculum

The Hornell High School uses a 100 point grading scale with 65 as the minimum grade to pass a course. All subjects are used to determine cumulative grade point average on an unweighted basis. This is the figure used on a student’s transcript and for student college applications. Students are required to earn a minimum of 22 credits to graduate.
Academically, the Hornell High School operates on a 9 period day, allowing students to take a maximum course load of 7.5 credits.

Graduation Distinctions and Class Rank

A student must be enrolled as a full-time student at Hornell High School in order to be considered Valedictorian or Salutatorian of his/her graduating class with four consecutive semesters prior to the determination of a class’s rank order. The Valedictorian is the student with the highest weighted rank average whereas the Salutatorian is the student with the second highest weighted rank average. In the event two or more students share a weighted rank average within .3%, co-recipients with be named.

Final ranking is completed at the end of the first semester of the 12th grade year. Courses used for ranking are: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Second Language. Weighting given to courses within these subject areas are provided below:
