A Classroom Tribute: Honoring Our Veterans

Amy Winslow’s third-grade class is working on a special project to honor our nation’s veterans. This Veterans Day, the students will create a heartwarming tribute to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Veterans Day holds a special place Winslow’s heart. As the twin sister of a Nursing Corp veteran and a former military wife, she has firsthand experience of the sacrifices our nation’s heroes have made. Living in Germany during the Iraq War, she witnessed the daily impact of deployment on military families. Winslow supported students whose parents were deployed and organized a heartwarming welcome-home celebration for returning soldiers.

To honor these brave individuals, students were encouraged to bring a photo of a veteran in their family (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc.) to school. These photos will be displayed on a class bulletin board, creating a visual representation of the sacrifices and service.

“Veterans Day is special to me because my uncle was in the military and he was fighting for our country,” said Finn Greenthal, third-grader.

In addition to the photo display, students will also create personalized stars. Each star will feature the name, rank, and branch of the Armed Forces of the veteran they’re honoring. These stars will be added to the bulletin board, further enhancing the visual tribute.

“Veterans Day makes me think of my great-grandpa who protected us. It’s a really special day,” said Keon Ridgeway.

By participating in this project, students will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of Veteran’s Day and the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes. It’s a meaningful way to connect with history and express gratitude to those who have served our country.
